Pigeon fire on North San Marcos Rd.

Within minutes of arriving at the Birch’s home after Claire’s memorial service, a fire started which put a damper on the gathering…
Two pigeons managed to arc two power lines in the valley below the house which resulted in a loud noise and a cloud of smoke and feathers.
It was amazing how fast the fire spread up the valley and impressive how quickly the local fire departments and Los Padres crews knocked down the blaze.
(I was only using a 50mm lens which will give you some idea of how close i was to the action.)

Painted Cave bee rescue

Piet was in town and we spent the morning extracting bees from a house up on Painted Cave Road.
The honey was super dark, almost looks like avocado honey, yuummm!
Thanks to Karen for the bees and for snapping most of the photos.
The bees are happily buzzing around their new home in Goleta :)

Die Antwoord rocks LA!

I finally got a chance to catch a live show of one of my favorite bands at the (sold out) El Rey Theatre this weekend.
The show was epic, super high energy!
I was really surprised that most of the crowd were young Americans, I had assumed that it would be a soutmielie reunion, not so much. Interscope made a good decision signing Die Antwoord. Marketing dollars and their distribution channel – Die Antwoord is going to be huge!

I had my camera and played paparazzi too which was a blast – check out the slideshow here

bee vacuum success!

A couple of weeks ago I tried to coax a swarm into an empty hive about 20 feet up on the back side of a movie set facade in Ventura.
The bees did not move into the hive but instead used the underside of the box as a nice extension to hang their comb on.
Today I went back, this time with a scissor lift and extracted the bees with my nifty new bee vacuum. The bees are now happily adjusting to their new home in my backyard apiary :)
The bee vacuum is based on the genius design by Rob Overton of bushkill.com and took me about 3 hours to make. The vacuum is powered by Kim’s shopvac with a valve to regulate the pressure so that you don’t hurt the bees by whizzing down the tube and into the hive too fast.
Thanks for all the help from Glen, Ban, Ernie and Scott and also to Matt for taking the pictures and cleaning all the honey off the lift when we were done :)
Here are some more photos of the extraction…

I just picked up a copy of Application Gap’s new Easy Release app for the iPhone and it is awesome!

Fortunately I happened to run into 2 of my heros, Nelson Mandela and Wikus van de Merwe while testing the app for the first time! Mr Mandela modeled and Wikus witnessed the photo shoot…

The app generates a Getty compliant model release PDF, click on the image below to see an example…
