vacation rental in bend, oregon – close to beer!

If you are looking for a place to stay in Bend Oregon this summer, a good lodging alternative to a hotel is DJ’s Bend Vacation Rental (DBVR). It is located one block from Drake Park and (most importantly) walking distance from the Deschutes Brewery, makers of Mirror Pond Pale Ale, one of my favorite beers :)

Photos and more info about DJ’s Bend Vacation Rental bungalow can be found here…

memories of jim stauss

Here are some photos of Jim that i took over the past couple of years and a slideshow of the Mundells from November 2007.

[update]
slideshow of photos from Jim’s memorial service.
and also the slideshow of scanned photos shown at the memorial service.

Jim passed on this morning from complications related to CBD, a neurological disorder resulting in brain atrophy.

I had the pleasure of hanging out with him a few times over the past year.
His words were truncated and his sentences delivered with great difficulty but still he managed to communicate some deeply moving things to me.
On one occasion were driving up on Coyote road looking at the tea fire damage, Jim had been trying to tell me about Jade (his daughter). It had taken him more than ten minutes to say “I love her… I love her” and then, clear as day he blurts out “I’ll never forget that!”
The painful irony was heartbreaking.

Jim liked to eat and drink. A lot. We were in Starbucks and, as usual, he was devouring a pastry and mixing it up with some black coffee when he noticed a Frank Sinatra song playing. His eyes lit up and he gesticulated, smiling at the ceiling and then at me but it was taking me too long to understand so he broke into song. Loudly. For several seconds he blissfully sang along – no words, just sounds – before he embarrassingly stopped, looked around and went back to the pastry.
That was a wonderful carefree moment and, i believe, exactly what he is doing right now.

second annual kids joshua tree camping trip.

the big kids and i headed out with chris to the desert on thursday.
we spent the night at the harmony motel [*] where bono and the lads stayed when they were working on the joshua tree album.
the next two days were spent climbing, hiking and enjoying the magic that is joshua tree…
there were 35 kids this year!

on the first day phoebe was very lucky to find an old leather treasure map hidden in the rocks.
it took the kids about half a day to orient themselves on the map and then we went on an epic treasure hunt!
fun times all around :)

here are some photos:
part 1 – road trip, harmony and night photos…
part 2 – rocks, climbing, hiking, fun.
treasure hunt in the desert :)
hanging out around the fire :)

[*not only is the harmony motel awesome, it is also owned by a south african, you can't go wrong!]

organic urban chicken eggs!

the chickens finally started laying eggs, there was much excitement as we got our first three this weekend!
the kids have checked for eggs at least 20 times today since finding the first one :)

i think the coop etc cost around $600 so that’s $200 per egg, what a deal!
the chickens will totally pay for themselves in just 5 years :)

here are some chicken photos from the last six months
